Over 45 million users opted for number portability till April: TRAI

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has revealed that the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests surged to 45.89 million at the end of April 2012, up from 41.88 million in March. In the month of April 2012, total number of subscribers who have submitted their request for MNP was about 4.01 million.
In MNP Zone-I (Northern & Western India) the maximum number of recorded requests were in Gujarat (4.23 million) followed by Rajasthan (4.10 million) whereas in MNP Zone-II (Southern & Eastern) the maximum number of requests have been received in Karnataka (5.11 million) followed by Andhra Pradesh Service area (4.44 million). Overall, the total number of telephone users in India surged to 952.91 million at the end of April, up from 951.34 million at the end of March – a growth of 0.16 percent. However, the number of subscriptions in urban areas dipped to 618.92 million in April, from 620.53 million in March. In rural areas, subscriptions increased from 330.82 million to 334 million during the review period.
TRAI further said overall tele-density in urban areas dipped to 168.83 from 169.55, while it increased from 39.22 to 39.57 in rural areas. Overall share of urban users decreased to 64.95 percent from 65.23 per cent, whereas share of rural subscribers surged to 35.05 percent in the month of April, according to TRAI.
The number of wireless telephone users has also increased to 921.02 million in April from 919.17 million in March --- a growth of 0.20 per cent. According to TRAI, private operators dominate the wireless market with 88.76 percent share whereas state-run BSNL and MTNL hold only 11.24 percent market share.
