Nokia taps Zynga to improve its Windows Phone in Lumia

Lumia

In order to fortify its app store and eyeing growth for its Lumia range, Finnish handset major Nokia has associated with Zynga to bring games developed by Zynga to Nokia Lumia smartphones and Windows Phones during autumn 2012.

The Zynga games include 'Words With Friend's and 'Draw Something', which will available via Nokia Collection' to Nokia consumers.

Although, Nokia will later make these games available to all Windows Phone consumers through its Marketplace.

"The Windows Phone Metro UI will deliver an outstanding user experience to consumers, adding more great gaming titles to our rapidly growing portfolio from leading publishers," said Bryan Biniak, VP, Global Partnering & Application Development, Nokia.

The struggling handset maker is betting high on its Lumia range, as it already scrapped its Symbian platform to support the Windows-OS through its handsets. So far, the Lumia range hasn't marked any significant impact on the global market, due to weak app store.

The company reckons that the partnership with Zynga will allow it to bring exclusive app and gaming experiences to Nokia Lumia consumers around the world. Presently, the Windows Phone Marketplace offers around 100,000 apps to the users of Window-based handset.

"We constantly strive to listen to our players who help us focus on the platforms where they want to play.  By partnering with top global brands such as Nokia and Windows Phone, we are able to reach more players with our franchise games," said David Ko, Chief Mobile Officer for Zynga.

Nokia 9500 Communicator specification

Nokia 9500 Communicator is a smartphone produced by Nokia. It runs on the Symbian-based Series 80 platform.

The 9500 is equipped with a 150MHz Texas Instruments OMAP Processor and 64 megabytes of SDRAM. It features two screens - a fully functional interior screen, and a restricted-function external screen, which operates on a stripped down Series 40 user interface.

Connectivity features of the 9500 include: Bluetooth, Infrared, USB, Wi-Fi, CSD, HSCSD, GPRS and EDGE. It comes with a built-in fax machine and multi-account POP3/IMAP email client.

The built-in Web browser, a Nokia-branded version of Opera, is able to render both WAP and HTML Web pages. Like others in the Communicator series, the 9500 has a full QWERTY keyboard.

Built-in software includes a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation program, which are compatible with the M.icrosoft Office suite equivalents, also featured is an MP3 player. In addition to the software applications provided by Nokia, a large range of 3rd party software is available; many programs written for older Nokia Communicators are compatible with the 9500 and new software can be written in C++ or OPL.

The 9500 also runs Java ME applications but some of these are not compatible with the unusually large and wide screen, such that many existing Java games will run, but only use the top left hand corner of the screen. It also supports a 2 GB Multimedia Card (MMC). It is claimed by some suppliers that some 4GB MMC+ cards will work, but there are many reports that this is not so.

Super 10 thinks about Nokia

1) The ringtone "Nokia tune" is actually based on a 19th century guitar work named "Gran Vals" by Spanish musician Francisco Tárrega. The Nokia Tune was originally named "Grande Valse" on Nokia phones but was changed to "Nokia Tune" around 1998 when it became so well known that people referred to it as the "Nokia Tune."
2) The world's first commercial GSM call was made in 1991 in Helsinki over a Nokia-supplied network, by Prime Minister of Finland Harri Holkeri, using a Nokia phone.
3) Nokia is currently the world's largest digital camera manufacturer, as the sales of its camera-equipped mobile phones have exceeded those of any conventional camera manufacturer.
4) The "Special" tone available to users of Nokia phones when receiving SMS (text messages) is actually Morse code for "SMS". Similarly, the "Ascending" SMS tone is Morse code for "Connecting People," Nokia's slogan. The "Standard" SMS tone is Morse code for "M" (Message).
5) The Nokia corporate font (typeface) is the AgfaMonotype Nokia Sans font, originally designed by Eric Spiekermann. Its mobile phone User's Guides Nokia mostly used the Agfa Rotis Sans font.
6) In Asia, the digit 4 never appears in any Nokia handset model number, because 4 is considered unlucky in many parts of Southeast/East Asia.
7) Nokia was listed as the 20th most admirable company worldwide in Fortune's list of 2006 (1st in network communications, 4th non-US company).
8. Unlike other modern day handsets, Nokia phones do not automatically start the call timer when the call is connected, but start it when the call is initiated. (Except for Series 60 based handsets like the Nokia 6600)
9) Nokia is sometimes called aikon (Nokia backwards) by non-Nokia mobile phone users and by mobile software developers, because "aikon" is used in various SDK software packages, including Nokia's own Symbian S60 SDK.
10) The name of the town of Nokia originated from the river which flowed through the town. The river itself, Nokianvirta, was named after the old Finnish word originally meaning sable, later pine marten. A species of this small, black-furred predatory animal was once found in the region, but it is now extinct.

Nokia Pure View on India

After initially announcing it would come in May, and then dropping a countdown red herring, the PureView is finally opening its big 808-eye in India today. The 41MP camera (and phone!) lands with a 33,899 Rupee ($600) MSRP, depending on your barter skills. The PureView might not be a spec heavyweight, with its single-core 1.3GHz chip, 512MB RAM and 360 x 640 display, but we still found it hummed along smartly with its nimble Symbian Belle OS. For those of you who've already set the cash aside, might be time to call that Indian friend.

It is hard to ignore a chance to play around with the world's first camera phone with a 41MP sensor. So when we got a chance for a hands-on experience, you can be sure we were not lagging behind. The 808 PureView looks similar to its predecessor, the N8. The front is dominated by the 4-inch bright touch display, while the back highlights the camera lens. Here the 41MP stands out on the embossed lens cover that hides the sensor.

Nokia’s windows phones Nokia Lumia 710 & Lumia 800 announced for India

Nokia Lumia 710 and Nokia Lumia 800 With instant updates, super-fast mobile browsing and designs that match your lifestyle, experience the amazing everyday. On 14th Nov, 2011 Nokia announced Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 in India. With its smartphone market share in India in a free fall for the last two years, Nokia is hoping that Lumia phones will help it put up a better show against Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS.

Lumia 800
Wow! This was the first reaction when we saw Lumia 800. And the reasons for that were the gorgeous screen and a fantastic design. Lumia 800 is compact, sleek and very stylishly-built phone. The unibody shell is built of polycarbonate, which is soft to touch, is sturdy and feels a lot more premium than normal plastic. On the top, there are slots for micro USB, micro SIM card tray and 3.5mm jack. As it has been the case with most unibody phones, users can not access battery and there is no provision to add micro SD card.
The front is all curved glass, with three capacitive touch buttons. The buttons – back, home, and search – are standard Windows Phone 7 affair. On the right side, there are buttons for volume control, on/off and camera shutter. All of them have chrome finish to them.
The AMOLED screen is vibrant and bright. Combined with the modern design, this goes very well with the Metro UI of Windows Phone 7.5 aka Mango.
Lumia 800 has an 8 megapixel camera. Inside the demo room lighting conditions were not very appropriate and hence we could not test out camera properly – it’s hands on, right? But the pictures we took looked good and had appropriate colours.
The interface was the standard Windows Phone affair. That means it was fast and fluid. In addition to Mango apps, Lumia 800 will come with Nokia Drive – a navigation app – and Nokia Music. Of these Drive, with its turn-by-turn voice navigation feature and support for a large number of India cities, has potential to be the killer feature of Nokia’s Windows Phones.
Lumia 800 Windows Mobile Phone Specifications:
  • Quad Band GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
  • HSPA+, 3G. NFC Support
  • 3.7” inch (480×800 Pixels) Capacitive Touch Display
  • 8 Megapixel Camera with HD VIdeo, Autofocus and Flash
  • 1.4 Ghz SIngle Core Processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 16GB Memory Space
  • Wireless Wi-FI + Bluetooth
  • GPS with OVI Navigation Maps
  • FM Radio with RDS + 3.5 mm Audio jack
  • Zune Experience, Xbox Live, Mobile Office
  • People Hub, Picture Hub
  • IE9 Web Browser

Lumia 710
This device from Nokia is aimed at mid-segment of smartphone market. And as a result lacks the chutzpah and elegance of its older sibling.
Lumia 710 is more average looking phone with a pretty thick design and plasticky buttons. Fortunately, the material on the back cover – yes, unlike Lumia 800, it has one – is soft rubber which feels nice to touch.
While Lumia 710 felt like a decent mid-range phone, we did not like the touchscreen at all. Not only it looked dull – especially after we had feasted our eyes on the gorgeous screen of Lumia 800 – but also felt a little slow as far as touch response is concerned. Of course, it was a demo piece and things may turn out to be different with the actual retail units.
The camera on Lumia 710 can shoot 5 megapixels pictures. We snapped a couple of pictures in the demo room. They were decent but nothing exceptional. Due to low light there was noticeable grain on the photos.
On the software side, Lumia 710 runs the same Mango that other Windows phones sport. Performance is good and there is no lag. Similar to how it is with Lumia 800, this phone too will come with Nokia Drive and Music.
Lumia 710 Features & Specifications:
  • Single Core 1.4GHz Processor
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 3.7” inch Touchscreen (480×800 Pixels) with ClearBlack display technology
  • 8GB Internal Memory
  • 3G, HSPA/HSDPA/HSUPA
  • Micro Sim Card Support
  • 5 Megapixel Camera with 720p HD VIdeo Recording
  • Wi-Fi + GPS + Bluetooth
  • Social Networking. Email, Messengers
  • Download Many Apps from Windows App store
  • Talktime up to 7 Hours
  • Standby Time up to 400 Hours
  • Dimensions: 119 x 62.4 x 12.44mm

Nokia 808 Pureview bound for US

The US release is a bit of a surprise

Nokia's powerful cameraphone, the 808 PureView, launched this month in countries around the world - but not the U.S.
In fact, Nokia previously stated that they had no plans to bring the Symbian-run 808 Pureview (or any other non-Windows Phone smartphones) stateside in the future.
So it comes as a pleasant surprise that Nokia's U.S. president, Chris Weber, said that the company is trying to "figure out a way" to bring the Pureview to North American shelves.
Weber said that the phone won't be picked up by any specific U.S. carrier, but that it will be AT&T-compatible.

"The bands that are currently being sold elsewhere in the markets that we have announced are AT&T-compatible, so it will run on AT&T's 3G network," Nokia spokesperson Karen Lachtanski told TechRadar today.
Unfortunately, though, "the 808 Pureview is not an LTE device."

Nokia offers something unique

Lachtanski confirmed that Nokia initially had no plans to offer the 808 Pureview in the States, but that increased interest caused them to consider changing that.
"In the U.S., our smartphone strategy with Windows Phone is still to offer that through the carriers. So that has not changed," she said.
"But every once in a while something kind of unique comes along, and if there's interest from third-party retailers to carry something like the 808 Pureview then we'll look to try to make it happen," Lachtanski continued.
Such is the case with Nokia's 808 Pureview, though Lachtanski made sure to note that Weber's statements are not an official announcement. "There's nothing to announce right now, but as soon as there is, we will do so," she said.

808 Pureview Specs

The Nokia 808 Pureview comes packing a walloping 41-megapixel camera, making it the perfect phone for aspiring photographers who'd rather not carry around a bulky DSLR.
It also records 1080p video, so amateur filmmakers might find it useful as well.
Running the Symbian Belle OS, the Nokia 808 Pureview sports a single-core 1.3Ghz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4-inch AMOLED screen, and 16GB of storage.
It may be the last great Symbian phone, though that remains to be seen.

Nokia Lumia 610 officially released in the UK

Budget phone comes cheap

The Nokia Lumia 610 has been officially launched in the UK and brings a budget friendly, smartphone experience to the masses.
Available from the first week in June, the Lumia 610 is Nokia's most affordable Lumia smartphone to date.
O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone will all offer the Lumia 610, along with Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U, with contracts starting at £15 per month.

Entry level specs with entry level price

The Lumia 610 packs a 3.7-inch (800 x 400) screen, 800MHz processor, 256MB of RAM and 5MP camera with LED flash.
It also sports the latest version of Microsoft's mobile software, Windows Phone Tango, which has been specially developed to run on smartphones with less power – allowing manufactures to keep the cost of the handset down.
Also included is Wi-Fi tethering and the Lumia 610 comes "pre-loaded with Nokia Mix Radio, our free music streaming service and Nokia Drive, our global turn-by-turn navigation app" – not bad for a budget device.
We've asked Nokia how much the Lumia 610 would be SIM-free and we're waiting for a response.
